Armenian human rights advocates claim fight against corruption is ineffective


According to representatives of Transparency International Armenia’s Anti-Corruption Center, Journalists’ Club Asparez in Gyumri, and Vanadzor’s Helsinki Citizens Assembly (HCA), struggle against corruption in Armenia is not productive at all, "even though the statistical data of the Prosecutor-General’s Office show the opposite."

On December 25, 2009, the court of common jurisdiction rejected the claim of HCA Vanadzor on obliging to start a criminal case or to reject starting a criminal case.

Corruption is a global problem. Surveys confirm that most citizens perceive and often experience deep-rooted public corruption in their daily lives. Econometric research indicates that corruption and poor governance negatively impact economic development, particularly so in poor countries where the most vulnerable in a society suffer most. Weak governance increases risks for foreign direct investors and retards the potentially positive impact of development aid.
