Message from Damon Wilson, NED President and CEO, to Partners

March 6, 2025

News | Multimedia

For the first time in our 42 year history, we face a dire financial situation as we have been unable to access our congressionally-appropriated funds since late January. We have pursued every path available to us to no avail. This situation is unprecedented and has forced us to make the painful decision to suspend all partner support and furlough the majority of our staff.

We understand how damaging, and in many cases dangerous, this disruption is to you, your staff, and your loved ones. We take our obligations seriously and our top priority is getting back to our core mission of supporting your noble work.

As part of our efforts to secure our funds, we have reluctantly chosen to pursue legal recourse today. Our lawsuit is driven solely by a desire to secure our congressionally appropriated funds so that we can support you and so many others on the frontlines of the cause of democracy and freedom.

NED is a bipartisan organization – we were created jointly by Republicans and Democrats, are governed by a board balanced between both parties, and composed of institutes representing both political parties, labor, and business. We are seeking access to our funds so we can restart our work advancing freedom around the world in line with our congressionally mandated, bipartisan mission.

We know heightened focus on our work can impact yours and many of you have reached out asking how you can help. If you are approached by the media for comments, the most effective way to contribute is by highlighting the real-world impact of the funding suspension on your important work and the broader consequences for democracy if funding is not restored. For additional information, please refer to NED’s attached press release and official statements on our website and social media platforms. Please be in touch with our program staff with any concerns or questions you have.

As we proceed, I want to express my gratitude to all of you. Thank you for your work, for your words of encouragement, and for your belief in us. You are what makes this organization so special. Your strength gives us strength.

In solidarity and with deepest respect,
Damon Wilson
